Nuclear Information Centre
Exhibit A (2026). (MP4, Duration 5m 00s)
[NIC/NP/005]
Using Sizewell as a working example, Exhibit A is a multi-layered, flickering and finally fading audio-visual exhibit focussed on the UK’s now redundant first generation power stations as they incrementally disappear from view over the next one hundred years or so.
Having become firmly rooted within their respective localities since the 1950s and 60s, all of the UK’s Magnox nuclear power stations plus original research sites are now under the ongoing care and maintenance of Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) while they carry out their 100 plus years long decommissioning process which will ultimately see the sites re-purposed and re-landscaped with most of the original and non-reuseable infrastructure removed.
The distinctive and now familiar greying bulk of the reactor buildings will be amongst the last structures to go once the internal components have been deemed radiologically safe enough to dismantle and relocate. However, until that time they will remain as powerful but slowly decaying visual reminders of our first fission fuelled forays into civil nuclear power generation.
In this exhibit you are additionally serenaded by the ambient sounds of ongoing human generated decommissioning activities alongside the local gull community and other avian stakeholders who keep a close, unpaid aerial eye on proceedings.
