X Marks the Spot (2024).
[NIC/NW/015]

The final disposal of the UK’s most hazardous and long-lasting nuclear waste is currently subject to a consent-based process that will eventually culminate in a test of public support.

Can you think of any other UK nuclear activities that are currently subject to a public, consent-based process?

X Marks the Spot addresses our relationship with nuclear power, weapons and waste but also asks wider questions of selectivity and decision making within the nuclear realm.

Who does and who doesn’t get to have a voice?

Update: X Marks the Spot was exhibited for the first time at The Wilson Museum Art Gallery, Cheltenham between 15 Jan and 02 March 2025. During this time a total of 688 completed “voting” slips were deposited in the NIC ballot box.

The questions themselves were not actually intended as a means of generating clear cut empirical data but rather to stimulate public engagement and offer food for thought around subjects of nuclear power, weapons and waste.

So, while we may not be able to read too much into the raw data, the true value of the work may already have been realised.

Nevertheless, the results still make for interesting reading and are presented below over four authoratitive looking pie charts.
