X Marks the Spot (2024).
[NIC/NW/015]

The final disposal of the UK’s most hazardous and long-lasting nuclear waste is currently subject to a consent-based process that will eventually culminate in a test of public support.
Can you think of any other UK nuclear activities that are currently subject to a public, consent-based process?
X Marks the Spot addresses our relationship with nuclear power, weapons and waste but also asks wider questions of selectivity and decision making within the nuclear realm.
Who does and who doesn’t get to have a voice?

Update: Over the course of our recent (un)told 2024 artists in residence exhibition at The Wilson Museum Art Gallery, Cheltenham (15/01/25 to 02/03/25) a total of 688 completed “voting” slips were deposited in the NIC ballot box.
Analysis is ongoing but here is an early iteration onf the results as presented in 4 pie charts. The questions themselves were nt actually engineered to generate clear cut empirical data but rather to stimulate public engagement and offer food for thought about certain aspects of our present day nuclear activities.
So, while we may not be able to read too much into the raw data, the true value of the work may already have been realised.
Nevertheless, the results still make for interesting reading and an opportunity to produce individual pie charts that present a seemingly definitive picture of the available data owing to their neat and tidy appearance and satisfyingly strong visual aesthetic.
